A female mixed-breed dog weighing about 40 pounds had somehow gotten her head stuck inside the discarded fiberglass cooler. In order to calm the animal down, a veterinarian told rescuers they could give the dog the sedative Valium through an intravenous line. That allowed rescuers to free the dog by cutting into the cooler with a reciprocating saw, according to Piedrahita. An animal control officer later took custody of the dog. The officer told the rescue crew that judging from her wounds, the dog had been trapped for at least a week. He also said the dog had recently given birth and was carrying extra body fat that more than likely kept her alive while she was trapped. (via OrlandoSentinel.com)
